Village Hall News

Thanks to everybody who came to, and helped with, the Curry Night. As well as the enjoyment, chat and conviviality the VH made a profit of around £400 which will help us to keep paying the bills which, as you will all know, don't get any smaller.

We are continuing the preparatory work for renewing the roof and are researching the signage for disabled parking outside the hall. We now have a Health and Safety Policy to guide those who lead and attend events in the hall. A copy of this is posted on the notice board inside the hall.

The Parish Council and Village Hall Committee are making progress on the purchase and fitting of a new PA sound system and a projector.

Coming up

On Saturday 16th March there will be a Pub night with fundraising for breast cancer charity organised by three people in the village. There will be various games-shove ha'penny, table tennis, etc for the first part of the evening and then an opportunity to show off your singing skills with karaoke. You may prefer to be an 'audience' of course! But do come along to support the fundraising.

A group of ladies from the village are bravely walking a marathon in London in aid of Breast Cancer. Our pub night will be an evening of fun with entertainment provided by the ladies to raise money for such a good cause. The bar will be open and profit from this will go towards the village Hall maintenance.  Come along and join the fun.

Saturday 20th April, is the annual AGM for the Village Hall Committee at 7pm. Th AGM will be very brief and then we will have the bar open all evening with Jayne Delarre leading us through another country dancing night. Other than buying drinks the whole evening's entertainment will be free, unless you wish to make a donation on your way out. We will have containers on the door for these.

At a date to be decided in May the bar will be open for a Pub Night with games-more details to follow.

Saturday 22nd June is the Annual Village Fete. More details to follow.

Don't forget the FREE afternoon on Tuesday 26th March with Tea and Cakes between 2pm and 4pm. This is funded externally thanks to a grant so come along, have a chat, and meet up with new folk.

Time is still being spent getting quotes for re-roofing and other remedial work on the hall. New uplighters have been installed in the car park end of the Hall which certainly added to the atmosphere at the curry evening-and was also effective at the History Group meeting.

You may only have a little time when you can come to VH, or help at an event, but it all counts and makes our community successful. Perhaps some of our younger villagers could get together and come to the AGM with ideas about what they would like to take part in, in the VH! (Parents-I guess your children won't have read this thought so could you please point it out to them!)

Thank you-and see you at the Village Hall soon

Don't forget the FREE afternoon on Tuesday 26th March with Tea and Cakes between 2pm and 4pm. This is funded externally thanks to a grant so come along, have a chat, and meet up with new folk.

Toad Patrol

Toads started moving this year on 14 February, no doubt encouraged by the mild weather. So far the patrol has helped 89 into the Grimmer and only found 9 squashed. About half the number of toads we helped last year and hat was already way down on previous years. The recent colder weather has brought things to a halt but we will keep checking. Thank you to our patrollers and to traffic slowing down as they pass.

Village Green Work Party - Thanks for...

  • the people who came along to the working party on the Green
  • the people who have commented-positively-on the work we carried out
  • and anybody who has offered help with any more work we carry out.
  • And apologies if the smoke from the bonfire aggravated anybody-but thanks to Dave for getting it to burn so well!

Next Working Party will be Saturday 16th March

Please come along from 9.30am. Offers of mid-morning tea welcomed!

Living Well in Winter - Village Afternoon

Come and join us on one of our Village Afternoons, 2pm till 4pm on 26th March. We will be offering tea and coffee and a selection of cakes, scones and sandwiches. Everyone from the village is welcome and those on child minding duties can bring their children. Well behaved dogs are welcome too. We have a selection of games from cards to board games and puzzles to entertain us.

These afternoons are funded by Mid Suffolk District Council From a Living Well in Winter grant. No booking necessary just turn up.

These events will also be held on Tuesday 30th April and 28th May 2024.

St Andrew’s Church Electoral Roll

Being on the electoral roll of the church entitles parishioners to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM)

Each year the Electoral Roll has a revision before the APCM. This year the APCM will be on 18th April at 7pm in church, so a minor revision will begin on 27th March and the electoral roll will be closed from that date. The updated roll will be on display from Easter Sunday, 31st March, at all services in church. Anyone on the electoral roll can see it at any time by phoning me.

If you would like to join the Electoral Roll, please phone me or email mjonesevans@yahoo.co.uk and I can drop an application form in to you. The form will need to be with me before the closing date of 27th March.

Thank you all – Margaret Jones-Evans

Village Litter Pick

Help keep our village clean by joining the Litter Pick on Saturday 2nd March starting at 9.30am from the Village Hall. All equipment and litter bags provided. Margaret Jones-Evans has kindly offered to host our biennial, traditional, fundraising coffee morning for the above event.

An Easter/Spring Floral Workshop

Wickham Skeith Village Hall - Thursday 28th March from 09.30am -1.00pm

Come and make a wreath style Spring decoration to grace your door or table, just in time for Easter. All the materials will be provided, but some personal foraging from yourself will make your creation unique.

The cost will be £30 and other ideas will be demonstrated. Treat a friend!

Contact Margaret for further details and register your interest, as soon as possible please, as this is a late call. I didn’t grasp the earliness of Easter this year!

If you have been to an event like this before, you will know it is fun and not stressful.

And you will go home with a gorgeous, unique, creation! Hope to see you there. Margaret Knights  rosecottageflowers@hotmail.co.uk.

 Update on flood support payments

The District Council is currently contacting all householders who registered a flood onto the County Council  reporting tool. So no further action is needed as long as you reported that your property was flooded. Register here by end December if not done so: https://highwaysreporting.suffolk.gov.uk/

October Floods

The Parish Council would like to thank all who helped during the floods of 20/21 October, particularly to those in four-wheel drive vehicles who helped ferry people from schools or stranded vehicles, and to those who gave tea and toilet facilities to stranded motorists. Our sympathy to everyone who has been affected by floods or suffered damage. Please access Suffolk County Council’s (SCC) website here for further information about flood recovery: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/about/flood-recovery-information-for-suffolk

SCC are asking all affected residents to report significant flooding to individual properties by using the Highways Reporting Tool at https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/highway-maintenance/report-a-highways-issue. If you do not have access to the internet, call the SCC customer service number: 0345 606 6171.

The Street was particularly badly affected with abandoned and broken-down cars and people sleeping in their vehicles. Verges have been worn away and silt, gravel and debris covered the carriageway. We have reported this in on the Highways link  and have been promised repair work within 20 days.

 Community Oil Syndicate

If you need any oil, a reminder the next syndicate deadline is 31 March.  Usual email address jerrybassett@icloud.com

Wickham Skeith Oil Syndicate - how it works

Our village oil scheme has been running for 14 years now and in the last year ordered well over 100,000 litres of discounted oil for its members.  if you’re not a member and would like to join, just drop me an email with contact details or give me a call if you don’t have email.

There’ll be five opportunities to place orders over the next 12 months.

On or before:

-  30 September

-  30 November

-  31 January

-  31 March

-  30 June

Before each of these dates I’ll place a reminder in the village newsletter and also send you an email reminder.  Then let me know by email (or phone) that you’d like to be included in the next order. I’ll need to know:

- address and telephone number(s) - unless you’ve ordered before

- quantity required (min 500 litres)

- any special instructions - eg concerning delivery

Within a couple of days of the above dates, a bulk order will be placed with the oil company which offers the best deal, which is usually several pence per litre lower than the price available to customers who order individually.  I'll let you know the same day:
- the name of the company

- price

- expected delivery date

- the company's contact details in case you need to speak to them directly

I'll pass your address and phone numbers to the company which will contact you (but normally only if you don't already have an account with them) and they’ll bill you directly.

If you've any questions please ring Jerry on 765908 or email jerrybassett@icloud.com

Village Defibrillator

I have recently taken on the guardianship of the village defibrillator and thought it would be a good time to remind villagers about the device.
Location - the defibrillator is located on the external wall of the village hall (next to the car park and emergency exit).
To access the device you will need to dial 999. They will then ask you for the cabinet number – 2334 and/or postcode of the device - IP23 8LX

These numbers are also on the outside of the defibrillator.

This information will be enable the 999 service to locate our defibrillator and give you the access code to allow you to get access to the device.

The defibrillator is portable and so can be taken to wherever it is needed in the village. 999 will talk you through how to use it and once it is switched on the device will also give you verbal and visual instructions.

Defibrillator training

No training is necessary to use the defibrillator but it would be useful if some villages have some training. I have contacted someone locally who can provide training for the defibrillator together with some resuscitation training. The cost of the training will be covered by the Parish Council and there are 10 places available for people who live in the village. The training takes about 2 hours and will include the use of a Resus Doll and training defibrillators.

If you are interested, please can you contact me as soon as possible. I can then organise a suitable date and time for the training.

If you have any queries regarding the defibrillator, please contact me. If I don’t know the answer, I will endeavour to find someone who does!
