Peter Paine, Church Elder, RIP

Peter died peacefully with his family and friends around him in the church on Easter Day. Peter was a much valued Elder and member of the congregation and also of the village community.

As an Elder in the church Peter held the bishop’s commission so Revd Barbara Bilston, who was present expecting to lead the Easter Sunday service, wrote to our bishops.  She received this response from Bishop Martin:

“I am so sorry to hear of Peter’s death. Will you please convey to the congregation my deepest sympathy and thank them for their care of Peter. He will be greatly missed and was a great servant of the church. His ministry as an Elder was deeply appreciated.”

Village Hall News

We held the Village Hall AGM on Saturday 20th April and heard the report of all the Village Hall activities through the last year. The financial report was received.

We elected officers as follows: Chair Jenny Elphick, Treasurer Rosemarie Hayne and Secretary Harriet Bowes.

Our thanks go to Jocelyn Bryant who stood down as secretary after many years of valued service. Also, thanks to Katie Durrant and Kevin Knights who both stood down from the committee but who will continue their work as Manager of the Village Fete and Licensee for the Village Bar respectively.

In addition, our committee members are Will Elphick, Graham Hayne, Dave Challinor and Mark Little. We are really grateful to all those who work so hard to support the work of our Village Hall which is a great resource for all of us in the village.

The Country Dance event was huge fun for the limited numbers who attended and our thanks go to Jayne and Steve Delarre who brought the music and taught us the moves! There was a great deal of laughter and sausage rolls were enjoyed in the interval and the bar was open all evening.

Maintenance of the Village Hall

The cost of insurance or the village Hall over the last year was £1328 and we have just renewed the policy. Obviously, it is essential to insure the hall for all the events we hold. We spent £3700 on electricity last year and we are about to change providers in August to reduce the cost.

We now have a Child and Adult Safeguarding Policy in place, a copy of which is in the hall on the notice board.

Village Afternoon

During the winter months we have now enjoyed three successful Village afternoons and it has been so good to see so many of us gather together in the hall for a tea of cake, scones and sandwiches with plenty of friendly chat. During an afternoon of relaxed fun, we offer you a choice of games, puzzles and quizzes. We will be holding our next on Tuesday May 28th.

EVERYONE in the village is welcome including children and well-behaved dogs. This is a free event funded by the Living Well in Winter Grant awarded by the Mid Suffolk District Council.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting

will take place in St Andrew’s Church at 7pm on 18th April. Please join us to elect churchwardens for the coming year, hear what is happening in the church and offer your thoughts. St Andrew’s is the only Grade 1 Listed Building in our village. The churchwardens, with the PCC members, are responsible for the maintenance of this historic part of the village and they would appreciate your help. We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and hearing ideas about preserving this important medieval building – it has served so many generations that we mustn’t be the ones to let it deteriorate.

Wickham Skeith Oil Syndicate - how it works

Our village oil scheme has been running for 14 years now and in the last year ordered well over 100,000 litres of discounted oil for its members.  if you’re not a member and would like to join, just drop me an email with contact details or give me a call if you don’t have email.

There’ll be five opportunities to place orders over the next 12 months.

On or before:

-  30 September

-  30 November

-  31 January

-  31 March

-  30 June

Before each of these dates I’ll place a reminder in the village newsletter and also send you an email reminder.  Then let me know by email (or phone) that you’d like to be included in the next order. I’ll need to know:

- address and telephone number(s) - unless you’ve ordered before

- quantity required (min 500 litres)

- any special instructions - eg concerning delivery

Within a couple of days of the above dates, a bulk order will be placed with the oil company which offers the best deal, which is usually several pence per litre lower than the price available to customers who order individually.  I'll let you know the same day:
- the name of the company

- price

- expected delivery date

- the company's contact details in case you need to speak to them directly

I'll pass your address and phone numbers to the company which will contact you (but normally only if you don't already have an account with them) and they’ll bill you directly.

If you've any questions please ring Jerry on 765908 or email jerrybassett@icloud.com

Village Defibrillator

As villagers will be aware our defibrillator was used over the Easter weekend. This sad event has highlighted the importance of this piece of equipment to the village. So, I thought I would remind people about the device.

Defibrillator Guardian

I am the Guardian of the defibrillator and as such am responsible for the upkeep of the device and ensuring that it is ready for use. Please contact me if there any problems regarding the defibrillator or if you have any questions. My contact details are:

Julie Keable, Hawthorn Cottage, The Street, Wickham Skeith.

Tel. 01449 766771 or 07724577383

My contact details will now be in the village Newsletter every month.

Location of Defibrillator

The cabinet containing the defibrillator is on the external wall of the village hall (next to the car park and emergency exit).

In the event of an emergency -         DIAL 999

They will ask you for the cabinet number – 2336 and Postcode – IP23 8LX

These numbers are also on the outside of the defibrillator cabinet. The 999 service will then give you the access code to allow you to open the cabinet. The defibrillator is portable and so can be taken to wherever it is needed.

999 will talk you through how to use the device and, once switched on, the device will also give you verbal and visual instructions.

You do not need training to use the device and once the pads are attached it will tell you when to shock and if NOT to shock.

The defibrillator cabinet also contains a defibrillator responder’s kit, which has cleansing wipes, tissues, disposable gloves, a razor, scissors for cutting clothing and a res-Cue mask if it is needed for CPR.

AFTER USE

Please let me know the defibrillator has been used and return it to me. If I am not in leave me a message and, if possible, give the defibrillator to another member of the Parish Council.

DO NOT let the emergency services take the defibrillator with them. I have spare pads and can get the device fully working again.             Thank you. Julie Keable

Village Defibrillator

I have recently taken on the guardianship of the village defibrillator and thought it would be a good time to remind villagers about the device.
Location - the defibrillator is located on the external wall of the village hall (next to the car park and emergency exit).
To access the device you will need to dial 999. They will then ask you for the cabinet number – 2334 and/or postcode of the device - IP23 8LX

These numbers are also on the outside of the defibrillator.

This information will be enable the 999 service to locate our defibrillator and give you the access code to allow you to get access to the device.

The defibrillator is portable and so can be taken to wherever it is needed in the village. 999 will talk you through how to use it and once it is switched on the device will also give you verbal and visual instructions.

Defibrillator training

No training is necessary to use the defibrillator but it would be useful if some villages have some training. I have contacted someone locally who can provide training for the defibrillator together with some resuscitation training. The cost of the training will be covered by the Parish Council and there are 10 places available for people who live in the village. The training takes about 2 hours and will include the use of a Resus Doll and training defibrillators.

If you are interested, please can you contact me as soon as possible. I can then organise a suitable date and time for the training.

If you have any queries regarding the defibrillator, please contact me. If I don’t know the answer, I will endeavour to find someone who does!
